Hailed as the “first great epic film of Black African cinema,” Sarraounia depicts the valiant deeds of Queen Sarraounia, a brilliant strategist and forceful leader of the Aznas in Niger, who resisted French colonial troops at the end of the 19th century. Sarraounia succeeds by using all of her powers and by creating strong alliances among African communities. Winner of the Grand Prize at FESPACO in 1987.
